Harmen de Hoop (1959, Amsterdam) is a visual artist who makes anonymous and illegal interventions in public space since 1985. He works on the notion of ‘place’ in the contemporary city, the behaviour of individuals or groups, and the conflicts of interests in public space. With his interventions he breaches the systems and brings forward another, often humane perspective. With this he tries to let people look at themselves in a different way, often with a sense of humor.
Documentation of his interventions has been exhibited at International Architecture Biennale (Sao Paulo), CCA (San Francisco), Graham Foundation (Chicago), Canadian Centre for Architecture (Montreal), iGaleria Vaclava Spaly (Prague), ARCO (Madrid), NIMK (Amsterdam), STROOM (Den Haag), Museum Het Valkhof (Nijmegen), Museum Jan Cunen (Oss), NUART (Stavanger).
His work is published in international art magazines and books, e.g. in ART PRESS (F) / KUNSTFORUM INTERNATIONAL (D)/ ART das kunstmagazine (D), / FOCUS (I) / Metropolis M (NL), ART & AGENDA (Gestalten Verlag), STREET ART (Verlag Ullmann).
He gives lectures on art, urban planning and architecture.
