Bram Van Meervelde refers with ‘De spade van Arthur’ to the objects presented and simultaneously to the legend of King Arthur. Here the sword Excalibur from the traditional tail has been replaced by a shovel, stuck in a concrete substance in a small public garden. The sculpture creates a dialogue between the workers maintaining public gardens and public space itself, however in this situation the shovel has been stripped of its abilities and doesn’t have a function anymore for them. Without any indications or signs the Constantia Teichmannplaats welcomes the, what appear to be left behind, tools.
