On the underpass at Bijlmerplein 395, a classical utilitarian ‘non-place’ of passage, Dutch media artist and software developer Matthias Oostrik installed the interactive light installation “E4.1 Bijlmer Moodwall”. The installation consists of 2500 led-lamps placed behind a semi-transparent surface and is programmed to react, with animated shapes and waves of light and joyful sound effects, when people approach it or pass by it. Oostriks “E4 Moodwall” concept was first presented as a demo version at Test_Lab Urban Screen Savers, before it was brought to Amsterdam Zuid Oost in 2009 by the Straat van Sculpturen project. “E4.1 Bijlmer Moodwall”, is perceived by the artist as an interactive dialogue that explores man-machine interaction. The installation won the 2009 Dutch design award for best project in public space. The work is installed permanently, but since a 2013 update, Oostrik regularly changes the program of the responding animations to keep it interesting for the regular passer-by.
